Minor Incompatibility Issues

Separately, Dr. dr. Maruhum Bonar Marbun, Sp.PD-KGH, FINASIM, of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, concurs with dr. Endang in declaring that kidney transplant is the best definitive therapy for stage five chronic kidney failure in patients who otherwise don’t have severe illness, such as diabetes or cancer. “After the transplant, the patient no longer needs to undergo dialysis, unless when the healing is slow.

However, it’s a low prevalence, less than 7%,” dr. Maruhum declared in the “Preparations for Kidney Transplant Donor and Recipient” live IG session last Friday (13/01/2023). However, not everyone can become a kidney donor or recipient. They must satisfy specific requirements to be deemed worthy as either. “For example, the patient must have strong heart and lungs. Before the transplant, the donor and recipient must undergo various compatibility tests, especially immune system compatibility level. If there are minor incompatibility issues, the doctor may administer medicine or specific actions. However, if they are too incompatible, the donor should be replaced with another. After the transplant, the recipient will be given immunosuppressants to prevent rejection of the new organ,” dr. Maruhum said.

“Both the donor and the recipient must see a doctor for the preparation of the kidney transplant. The donor should be a close family member of the recipient, to prevent them getting trapped in an organ commercialization scheme. It’s quite obvious, but let me remind that the donor should have the same blood type as the recipient. Therefore, hospitals generally have both medical teams and advocacy teams on the ready for organ transplants to help both donor and recipient.” (est)
