Indonesian students with special needs win gold and silver medals at international event

Jakarta, IO – Three students with special needs (PDBK) made Indonesia proud by winning gold and silver medals at the 13th Salon Culinaire 2023 held at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo). They successfully beat hundreds of other hospitality students and chefs from various countries.

Per Kemdikbud.go.id, Tuesday (1/8), the gold medalists were M. Hafiz Farhan Syafawi from state-run Pembina School for Disabled Students (SLB-B) in Palembang, South Sumatra, and Made Agus Ari Purnawan from state-run SLB No. 2 in Denpasar, Bali, while Nurul Hikmah from Pembina SLB-C in Banjarbaru City, South Kalimantan won silver.

The participants were given two hours to creatively make and decorate a cake with a diameter of 30 cm. They had previously received three stages of coaching from the Indonesia Pastry Alliance (IPA) team chaired by Chef Ucu Sawitri. According to Sawitri, this international competition is open without discriminating between participants based on special needs.

“Children compete not with children with special needs, but with professional chefs and hospitality students. I hope that through this competition the children will also gain valuable experience and become more independent,” said Ucu Sawitri. This international competition is organized by the World Association of Chefs Societies (Worldchefs), a global network of chef associations founded in Paris, France in 1928. (bp)
