How obesity, PCOS, and infertility correlate

Jakarta, IO – Polycystic ovary syndrome or “PCOS” is a women’s health problem caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. In PCOS, ovum (follicles) do not grow properly, causing ovulation (release of eggs) to cell. A USG check will discover an image of an excessive number of follicles in the ovary.

“The three symptoms commonly found in PCOS patients are menstrual problems, hyperandrogenism in the form of excessive hairiness, hair loss, and/or the proliferation of acne, and the finding of tiny follicles that do not grow during fertile periods in an USG check. If left untreated, other than causing infertility, it may cause metabolic syndrome illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, or endometrium within cancer 10- 15 years,” reported dr. Gita Pratama, Sp.OG(K), M.Rep.Sc., obstetrics and gynecology specialist from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, in the “Obesity, PCOS, and Infertility” live IG session on 5 October.

The causes of PCOS are uncertain, but we can expect both genetics and the environment to take part in it. Risk of PCOS increases if a patient is obese. It is estimated that 10%-15% of productive age women suffer from it, but about 50% of them go undiagnosed. The primary reasons for these women to go to a doctor (and to have been found to suffer from PCOS) are menstrual issues and infertility.
