Jakarta, IO – The world is grieving with South Korea after 153 partygoers died at a Halloween mass surge in the nightlife district of Itaewon, Seoul, on Saturday night local time.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, two Indonesian citizens were among the injured, but they only suffered minor injuries, confirmed the Foreign Ministry’s Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities Judha Nugraha, reported Kompas on Monday (31/10).

Judha said the two Indonesian citizens were taken to the hospital, but have now been discharged.

This horrific incident happened after a large crowd gathered shoulder to shoulder to celebrate Halloween in Itaewon. It was the first major event in three years since the Covid-19 pandemic after the government lifted almost all social distancing rules.

Several witnesses described the crowds becoming more unruly as the night wore on. The incident occurred around 22:20. Hundreds of people crammed into the narrow and sloped alley, and they became trapped and crushed.
