Jakarta, IO – The haze caused by forest and land fires which still affect a number of areas in Sumatra, has prompted the Jambi Provincial government to implement online distance learning.

Jambi Education Agency head Syamsurizal said that this measure was a follow-up to a circular issued by the Governor of Jambi regarding anticipation of forest and land fires and worsening air quality in the province, per CNNIndonesia, Monday (2/10).

“From October 2-4, we will carry out online teaching and learning activities from home, the implementation of which will be regulated by each educational unit,” said Syamsurizal.

Even though students are studying at home, high schools and other equivalent schools in Jambi will still be operating with teachers and other education personnel required to wear masks and health units activated.

“Also make it a habit to wash your hands before and after activities. Coordinate with the education department if something happens in the education unit,” urged Syamsurizal.

Not only in Jambi, forest and land fire smoke which has the potential to cause respiratory tract illness has also prompted the Palembang City Government to implement the same policy effective from today.

The Palembang City Education Agency earlier issued a circular regarding awareness and preparedness for the adverse impacts of haze and early warning regarding El Nino.

This letter was issued to anticipate the impact of forest and land fires, especially haze which could endanger students and teaching staff’s health.

“We will monitor the development of the ISPU (air pollution standard index) to determine how long it will be implemented,” said Ratu Dewa, Acting Mayor of Palembang. (un)
