Disgraced governor of Papua sentenced to 8 years in prison

Jakarta, IO – The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced the suspended Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe to eight years in prison and a fine of Rp500 million or subsidiary imprisonment of four months after he was found guilty of receiving Rp19.6 billion of in bribe and gratification, per CNNIndonesia, Thursday (19/10).

He was also required to pay Rp19.6 billion in compensation within a month after the decision became legally binding. If this is not paid, his assets will be confiscated and auctioned off by the public prosecutor’s office.

“If the convict does not have sufficient assets, he will be punished with additional two-year jail term,” stated the presiding judge Rianto Adam Pontoh.

Furthermore, Enembe was also given an additional sentence in the from of suspension of political rights for five years after he serves his sentence. He was proven guilty of violating Article 12(a) and (b) of Law 31/1999 on the Eradication of Corruption Crimes juncto Article 55(1.1) of the Criminal Code juncto Article 65(1) of the Criminal Code.

The verdict was more lenient than the public prosecutor’s demand of 10.5 years in prison, a fine of Rp1 billion and compensation payment of Rp47.8 billion. (bp)
