Believed to be Rohingya refugees, Basarnas evacuates 6 bodies floating off Aceh waters

Jakarta, IO – Six bodies of Rohingya refugees were found in Calang waters, Aceh Jaya regency, Monday (25/3).

They are believed to be aged between 25-40. With these findings, a total of 10 bodies have been found by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) after the ship carrying Rohingya refugees capsized and sank, per CNN Indonesia, Wed (27/3).

Aceh’s Basarnas head Al Hussain said the discovery was prompted by reports from fishermen who found bodies floating in the sea.

Al Hussain said Basarnas immediately transported the bodies to Teuku Umar Regional Hospital in Aceh Jaya. “There are a total of 10 bodies evacuated from Saturday, March 23 to Monday, March 25,” he said.

Basarnas previously received reports that a ship carrying around 100 Rohingya refugees capsized and sank in the waters near Samatiga district, West Aceh regency on Wednesday (20/3).

They were believed to be making a journey to Australia. To date, as many as 69 people have been evacuated. (un)
