Jakarta, IO – The Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) said candidate pair No 2, Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, have been victims of cyber violations, ahead of the February 14 polls.

Bawaslu member Lolly Suhenty noted that 45 percent of the hundreds of fake news (hoaxes) found by the agency were mostly directed at the contender supported by the Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM).

“The share for contender No 1 was 33 percent and contender No 3 at 18 percent,” said Lolly, per Viva, Wed (14/2).

Lolly detailed that based on the recapitulation of Bawaslu’s cyber monitoring results during the campaign period from November 28, 2023 to February 10, a total of 355 alleged internet (cyber) content violations were found.

She explained that the findings were divided into a number of categories, predominantly hate speech (96 percent), followed by politicization of race, religous and communal issues (3 percent) and fake news (1 percent).

Platform-wise, Facebook was the most widely used medium (33.2 percent), followed by Instagram (29.9 percent), X (28.5 percent), TikTok (7.9 percent) and YouTube (2 percent).

Lolly explained that the findings were obtained from different sources, namely from provincial-level Bawaslu offices and overseas Elections Supervisory Committees (Panwaslu), the Communications and Information Ministry (Kominfo) and public complaints from the official Bawaslu channel, search results for content suspected of containing hoaxes, election violations and hate speech on social media accounts and news portals.
