Mount Ruang eruption damages seismic station

Jakarta, IO – The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that the eruption of Mount Ruang which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (30/4) has damaged the seismic station whose role is to record and analyze volcanic seismic activities.

Seismologist Hetty Triastuty said the damage was due to the location of the seismic station being only about two kilometers from the center of the volcano. “Our equipment died not long after the eruption this morning,” said Hetty, per Katadata, Tue (30/4).

Nevertheless, there are still other seismic stations located on Tagulandang Island. The equipment at the observation station is still operational because it is located further away.

This damage is not the first. Mount Ruang seismic station was also damaged due to the eruption that occurred on April 17. The Geological Agency team immediately installed a replacement station and it resume operation three days later.

Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano that has a peak height of 725 meters above sea level and formed its own island separate from the other islands. It is situated in Tulusan village, Sitaro regency, North Sulawesi.

Today between 12.01am to 12.01pm WITA three earthquakes with an amplitude of 55 millimeters and a duration of 360 to 600 seconds have been recorded. (bp)
