Aceh Besar Residents Relocate 135 Rohingya Refugees to Governor’s Office in Banda Aceh

Jakarta, IO – The refugees arrived in their area on Sunday (10/12) morning. This measure was taken by the people of Lamreh, Aceh Besar, who rejected the refugees to be accomodated in their village, per CNN Indonesia, Mon (11/12).

The refugees arrived at the governor’s office at 8pm WIB the same day. Police officers and the Aceh Government refugee task force carried out the relocation in coordinating with the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

Iswanto, acting regent of Aceh Besar, said his administration has tried to shelter the refugees, but they faced widespread resistance from the local residents. He said the refugees would be temporarily sheltered at the Scout camps in the Pidie.

Meanwhile, UNHCR chief representative in Indonesia, Ann Maymann, said the immigrants would soon be relocated again especially considering that many children have not eaten since the group arrived. (un)
