57 Rohingya refugees stranded in Aceh due to leaking boat

Jakarta, IO – As many as 57 Rohingya refugees were stranded in the waters off Ladong village, Masjid Raya subdistrict, Aceh Besar regency, Aceh, Sunday (25/12).

Aceh Police spokesperson Chief Commissioner Winardy said they were stranded not far from the historical site of Indraparta Fort. The damaged hull of the ship is suspected to be the cause.

“The right side of the ship’s hull was damaged and they ran out of food,” said Winardy, reported Merdeka, Monday (26/12).

Of the 57 refugees, all of whom were adult men, four were sick and had to be treated at the local community health center. They have been provided with food.

Banda Aceh immigration authorities are still collecting their data. Meanwhile, their ship was still on the beach of Ladong and guarded by security forces.

“We are still coordinating with relevant authorities, including with the provincial government, regarding where the refugees will be sheltered,” he said. (un)
