Launching the Non-Judicial Resolution of Severe Human Right Violation Program, Jokowi: “Heal the Nation’s Wounds”

Jakarta, IO – RI President Joko Widodo launches the Recommendation for Non-Judicial Resolution of Severe Past Human Right Violations Program in the Regency of Pidie, Aceh, Tuesday (28/06/2023).

According to setkab.go.id, Wednesday (28/06/2023), Jokowi declared the Program as a step taken by the Government to restore the rights of the victims of the 12 severe human right violations in the past, “…as these violations left a heavy burden on the victims and their families,” he declared.

Jokowi believes that no process ever goes to waste. He hopes that the move will be the first step in healing the victim’s wounds, and that the Goverment will commit to prevent similar atrocities in the future. “May this good process opens the path for further efforts to heal existing wounds,” he declared.

In early January 2023, the Government acknowledged 12 incidents of severe human right violations in the past. The non-judicial settlement will focus on the restitution of the victims right, without negating the judicial mechanism for same.

The severe human right violations acknowledged by the Government include the 1965-1966 Incidents, the Talangsari Incident in Lampung (1989), the Rumoh Geudong and Sattis Post Incidents in Aceh (1989), the Enforced Disappearance of People across the country (1997-1998), the May Riots and Lootings of 1998, the Trisakti-Semanggi I-II Incidents in Jakarta (1998-1999), and the Wasior Incident in Papua (2001-2002).
