Komnas Perempuan reports 400,000 cases of violence against women in 2023

Jakarta, IO – The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) recorded hundreds of thousands of cases of violence against women in 2023 in its annual notes released on Thursday (7/3).

Komnas Perempuan commissioner Andy Yentriyani said this figure decreased by 55,920 (12 percent) from 457,895 cases compared to the previous year, per Detikcom.

Andy also said that there was a decrease in the number of complaints from 399,000 in 2022 to 289,000 in 2023. The report classifies violence into three categories, namely personal, public and state. She said that incidences of violence in the personal sphere was the highest. However, it was down to 1,944, from 2,098.

Meanwhile, cases in the public and state spheres have increased sharply by 44 percent to 4,182 and 176 percent to 188 cases, respectively.

Komnas Perempuan data also shows that psychological violence dominates with 3,498 cases (41.5 percent), followed by 2,081 cases (24.7 percent) of physical violence, 2,078 cases (24.6 percent) of sexual violence and 762 cases (9.05 percent) of economic violence.

Andy said that measures to anticipate the development of increasingly complex cases in women require support from the government. Komnas Perempuan urges that infrastructure acceleration in responding to hundreds of thousands of cases be realized immediately.

These include preventive measures such as protection, law enforcement and recovery for victims, including rehabilitation for perpetrators to ensure it does not happen again.

The annual note is published every year to commemorate International Women’s Day which is celebrated every March 8. This year is its 22th edition since its first publication in 2001. (un)
