Jakarta, IO – Like sailing in the middle of a storm, a ship must be able to navigate the raging waves in order to arrive safely at its destination. Likewise, the Maritime Museum is currently trying to “move on”, adapting itself to the lifestyle of the millennial generation. The museum, which is located in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, is starting to improve in all aspects so that it continues to exist and stay relevant.

In collaboration with Senyumuseum, the Maritime Museum dubbed the ground zero of Batavia was chosen as the location for the Batavia Exposition to be held from June 17-18. This event endeavors to trace the glory of the city of Batavia through collaborative works of art blending food, music and fashion.

There are three ‘Batavia Market’ bazaars set up within the museum. When the Independent Observer visited the location on Sunday (17/6), on the courtyard after the entrance to the museum, there was a ‘City Story’ bazaar in collaboration with the Indonesia Hidden Heritage Creative Hub. In this area, around 10 stands peddling their wares, which range from food, drinks, paper-based action figures to drawing booths for children.

Indonesia Hidden Heritage Creative Hub event director Aryo Bimo said the ‘City Story’ aims to develop the museum as an urban tourism icon by highlighting the cultural heritage of Jakarta and its creative economic products.

“With this creative program, we hope it will change the stigma in society who tend to think of museums as merely a place that display historical artefacts. That it can also be used as creative public spaces and alternative travel destination,” said Bimo.
