U-23 AFF Cup: Indonesia to meet Thailand in the semifinals

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian U-23 national men’s football team advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup with three other teams (Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam). The Garuda Squad was the best runner up.

In the group phase, Indonesia lost 1-2 against Malaysia and narrowly won 1-0 over Timor Leste. Meanwhile, Thailand became the first team to qualify for the semifinals after winning the Group A with 9 perfect points. The home team also had an unblemished record in the group stage.

Malaysia advanced to the semifinals after defeating Timor Leste 3-1 at the PTT Stadium, Tuesday (22/8). Malaysia earned 6 points from two matches. Previously, it beat Indonesia 2-1.

Vietnam emerged as the winner of Group C after defeating the Philippines 1-0 at the Rayong Province Stadium, Tuesday (22/8). Previously, it beat Laos 4-1 in their first match of Group C.

Vietnam and Malaysia’s wins helped the Indonesian team secure a ticket to the semifinals. Coach Shin Tae-yong said the four teams deserved to be in the semifinals.

“I hope the two matches will be great,” he said at a press conference ahead of the match. He said the team will give all their best to win against Thailand.

“I saw several matches by Thailand, I also saw matches from Malaysia. I think Thailand has a good squad in this tournament. For tomorrow’s match, we will do our best, and play in the best possible form,” he said.

The Indonesia vs. Thailand game will be held at the Rayong Province Stadium tonight, Thursday (24/8). (rr)
