Three Indonesian Pastries Ranked Among 12 Best Cakes in Asia

Jakarta, IO – More and more Indonesian culinary delights are getting international renown. This time, there are four culinary delights from Indonesia that are included in the list of “Most Popular Cakes in Asia” according to Taste Atlas, an online guide platform for various foods and tourism.

The three traditional Indonesian culinary delights are Kue Putu (3rd), Kue Lapis (5th) and Kue Lapis Legit (8th). Other cakes in the chart include cheesecake from Japan and Bibingka from the Philippines.

Kue Putu is made from sticky rice flour seasoned and colored with pandan leaves. Then, the mixture is steamed in a bamboo tube containing palm sugar in the middle.

Kue Lapis is a traditional Indonesian dessert which is also popular in Malaysia, Suriname, Brunei and Singapore. It is usually shaped like a moist layered pudding made from rice flour, sago, granulated sugar, salt, coconut milk and two kinds of food coloring.

Meanwhile, Kue Lapis Legit consists of 18 to 30 layers of dough made from egg yolks, sugar, flour, butter and spices which are baked separately with mace, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Unlike kue lapis, kue lapis legit is prepared by baking, not steaming. (bp)
