Mount Marapi evacuation process goes on, 12 climbers have yet to be evacuated

Jakarta, IO – The evacuation of dozens of climbers trapped after Mount Marapi volcano in West Sumatra erupted on Sunday (3/12) is still under way.

Head of the Padang City SAR Service, Abdul Malik, said currently there are still 12 climbers and eight bodies that have yet to be evacuated. He said difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions, in addition to ongoing volcanic activity, have hampered the evacuation process, per Kompas, Tuesday (5/12).

Of the total 75 climbers who were trapped, Abdul said that as of Monday (4/12) at 7am WIB, 49 climbers had been evacuated, with dozen of them killed. The injured are being treated at Dr Achmad Muchtar Hospital (RSAM) in Bukittinggi.

RSAM director Busril explained that the identification process is being carried out according to established procedures, aided by the West Sumatra Regional Police’s Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team.

“We have also contacted the family members to help with the identification,” he said. “The information on all victims is known, those with burn injuries are receiving optimal care.” (un)
