The Depiction of Yogyakarta in Traces of Philately

The exotic culture of Yogyakarta and its students are also captured in a 1956 stamp series commemorating the city’s 250th anniversary. 

Not only does it capture the culture of Yogyakarta; there are also several excellent series showing Ambarrukmo Palace Hotel in Tourism Hotels in 1965 at Kraton Yogyakarta, the 20th World Tourism Organization in 1995 at Kraton Yogyakarta, the 1995 Aga Khan Award, Commemoration of March 1st, 1949 Attacks, published in 1996, 50 years of Gajah Mada University in 1999, and the 100th anniversary of Taman Siswa in 2022. 

There are over 50 faces of Yogyakarta documented in stamps and philatelic collections. Yogyakarta’s traces of the past are also displayed on postcards, with pictures taken by Kassian Chepas, one of Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat’s accomplished photographers. 

Agus Leonardus, a photographer from Yogyakarta, is known for having captured the present images of Yogyakarta and publishing the photos as postcards. 

Sending messages through postcards was an interesting and much-awaited way to share life stories with friends and families during the 1990s.
