PPPA Ministry reveals 33 children have been killed at Malang soccer riot

Jakarta, IO – Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Ministry revealed that 33 children were killed in the riot that erupted at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, on Saturday (1/10).

PPPA Ministry’s deputy for special protection of children Nahar elaborated that the victims consisted of eight girls and 25 boys, aged between 4-17 years old, Antara reported on Tuesday (4/10).

Nahar said the ministry is still confirming the number of children being treated at local hospitals to come up with a definitive data, by coordinating with the ministry’s office in Malang. This will make it easier for relevant parties to provide healthcare services.

The tragedy took place after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in a win for the latter. Dismayed supporters took to the pitch, which prompted the police to fire tear gas, resulting in a stampeded that killed 125 people and injured more than 300. (un)
