Kemlu confirms no Indonesian affected by Taiwan’s giant quake

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) gave out statement saying that no Indonesians have been killed or injured in the massive earthquake that struck eastern Taiwan and triggered tsunami warning in Japan. So far, the earthquake has reportedly killed four.

“After Kemlu coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and IETO Taipei, so far no Indonesian citizens have fallen victim to the earthquake in Taiwan or in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan,” said Kemlu spokesperson Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, per CNBC Indonesia, Wed (3/4).

Previously, the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake measured 7.5-magnitude. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4, which was centered around 18 kilometers south of Taiwan’s Hualien City at a depth of 34.8 km.

The governments of Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines immediately issued a tsunami warning and evacuated residents to higher ground.  However, now the Japan Meteorological Agency has lifted the tsunami warning.

But the agency warned of waves as high as one meter may hit a number of coastal areas. Initially, the wave was estimated to reach 3m high. “Please avoid being near the sea for the meantime,” the agency said. (bp)
