Indonesia set to have trackless smart train in August

Jakarta, IO – Indonesia is set to operate Automated Rail Transit (ART) in the Nusantara Capital District (IKN) starting August this year. The electric train will operate without tracks but guided by magnetized road markers.

“The ART is planned to operate in the Sumbu Barat [West Axis] and Sumbu Timur [East Axis] sectors,” said Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, per Katadata, Thu (25/1).

The construction will be carried out in two phases. One train set consists of two carriages, with a total capacity of 324 passengers. It will run at an operational speed of 40 km/hour and a maximum speed of 70 km/hour.

Budi also announced the construction of an airport at IKN. He said it is likely that trials will be carried out in mid-2024. “The construction is estimated to be finished in July for trial,” said Budi.

Budi said the airport construction process will be accelerated by adding more equipment, working hours, and solving land acquisition issues.

The airport is situated 23km from Titik Nol (ground zero) and about 120km from Balikpapan. It will have a terminal area of 7,350 sqm and airside area of 347 ha, with runway length of 3,000 meters and width of 45 meters. (un)
