Indonesia beats New Zealand to become the favorite tourist destination for Australian tourists

Jakarta, IO – Indonesia is now the favorite tourist destination for Australian tourists, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The data shows that 1.37 million Australians visited Indonesia throughout 2023. Meanwhile, in the same period, only 1.26 million Australians visited New Zealand, per detikcom, Thu (22/2).

“New Zealand has been the leading destination annually since our records began nearly 50 years ago,” Jenny Dobak, head of migration statistics.

Australian arrivals to Indonesia are generally divided into two purposes: 86 percent for leisure and the rest came to visit their relatives.

ABS also noted that Indonesia surpassed the US as the second main destination for Australians in 2014. Australian visits to Indonesia reached its peak in 2019, then the number fell drastically due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similarly, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) also noted that the number of foreign tourists has increased since 2022. In 2023, Australians was ranked 3rd after Malaysians and Singaporeans in terms of the number of foreign arrivals to Indonesia. (un)
