Implementing Sustainable Tourism, these villages become tourists’ favorites

Jakarta, IO – Sustainable tourism is a tourism development concept that does not only focus on developing the economy but also pays close attention to the long-term impact, especially on the environment, social and culture.

This concept was developed by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) by focusing on four categories, namely cultural preservation, destination management, environmental preservation to economic use, for the community and visitors.

According to Kemenparekraf.go.id, Tuesday (20/6), here are seven villages implementing sustainable tourism.

Pujon Kidul Village, Malang

Located in the highlands of Pujon District, this village has a cool and beautiful environment.  Can be reached in about two hours’ drive, this village offers several tourist attractions, including planting and picking vegetables, to milking cows.

In addition, residents’ houses are open for tourists to either stay overnight or just try local food.  In this place there are also several special places provided for learning musical instruments.

Kali Gajah Wong Tourism Village, Yogyakarta

As the name implies, this unique tour is in a river called Gaja Wong. It all started when the younger generation who care about the environment turned a slum village irrigation canal into a place for cultivating tilapia. Thanks to these efforts, now the village in Umbulharjo is used as a source of income for tilapia ponds and has been emulated by several other villages.

Ponggok Village, Klaten

Ponggok Village’s natural potential comes from 5 springs.  Previously, abundant water was only used for irrigating rice fields and plantations.  However, now people use these water sources as tourist destinations.

The leading destination in Ponggok Village is Umbul Ponggok which can be used for swimming, snorkeling, diving practice, and taking selfies underwater.  Besides Umbul Ponggok, there are 4 other springs that are worthy of visit, namely Umbul Besuki, Umbul Sigedang, Umbul Kapilaler, and Umbul Cokro.

Kete Kesu Village, Toraja

The most iconic tourist attraction of Kete Kesu Village is the traditional solo sign ceremony, and graves on rock cliffs that are estimated to be 500 years old.  Tourists can also see the traditional tongkonan houses which are neatly lined up in Kete Kesu Village which are estimated to be more than 300 years old.

Blekok Village, Situbondo

The unique thing about Blekok Village is none other than the captive breeding of thousands of Blekok birds by the local community.  Tourists are also presented with various captive activities such as feeding birds and caring for sick birds.

Pentingsari village, Yogyakarta

Pentingsari tourist village has received various international awards such as being included in the top 100 sustainable destinations according to Global Green Destinations Days (GGDD). The attraction of this village is the daily life of its own people living harmoniously with nature. They still prioritize coexistence with nature and tourists can also feel the sensation of plowing rice fields, planting rice, catching fish, and learning to make tempeh.

Penglipuran Village, Bali

Penglipuran Village also occupies the top 100 positions as a sustainable destination according to GGDD and has been named one of the cleanest villages in the world.  In addition, this village prioritizes Tri Hita Karana customary rules which must balance religious, ecological and cultural aspects.  It is this rule that creates a special attraction for tourists.
