Illuminating the Spiritual Path, the meaning behind the Torch Parade tradition to welcome the Islamic New Year

Jakarta, IO – Indonesian people have a number of traditions to welcome the Islamic New Year or 1 Muharram which falls on Wednesday (19/7). One of them is the torch parade. This tradition can be found in many parts of Indonesia.

The parade is usually performed by children carrying bamboo sticks lit with flame. Accompanied by adults, they usually march in line for for several kilometers from the mosque after reciting the Quran. The women who beat the tambourine while chanting blessings and praises to God the Almighty.

The flame signified the lighting of the spiritual path. The torch is interpreted as a guide in life. Additionally, the torch parade is also an expression of gratitude for the blessings given throughout the year and the hope of getting more blessings in the following year.

The tradition also teaches the value of solidarity as well as the opportunity to strengthens kinship brotherhood among members of the communities. (un)
