IO, Bandung – Three students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), Padjadjaran University (Unpad), Bandung, West Java, namely Zaki Ali Fahrezi, Saeful Anwar and Bram Nathanael, have taken two championships at the Tirtayasa National Paper Competition (2020), held at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, Cilegon, at the end of February. Tirtayasa National Paper Competition is a national level Scientific Writing (KTI) exercise emphasizing technological innovation.

This activity is held every year at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, and this year the theme is “Development of Research & Technology to Strengthen the 4.0 Industrial Revolution in Indonesia”. Taking part were 49 teams, all from tertiary institutions across Indonesia.

Of the 49 teams, 10 were selected to continue to the final stage of the presentation. Unpad Delegation presented the title “Ocean Cleaner with IoT (Internet of Things) Microcontroller as a Solution for Cleaning the Marine Environment” with supervisor Subiyanto, Ph.D.

Saeful explained Ocean Cleaner is a tool designed to overcome the problem of marine debris in the waters of Indonesia and around the world. At present, marine waste is a global issue that is still complex to deal with.

“Ocean Cleaner utilizes wind power and is based on the IoT microcontroller as a monitoring tool, so we don’t need to go to the location to clean it, but simply monitor it via a website or cell phone,” Saeful said, as quoted by Unpad Public Relations, March 2, 2020.

In the competition, the Unpad team won first place and was named overall champion. (*/est)
