Jakarta, IO – The documentary film entitled “Mengejar Mbak Puan” produced by the Konde Institute, Perempuan Mahardhika and JALA PRT will be screened for the first time in front of the House of Representatives building, Jakarta, Thursday (12/10).

Konde.co editor-in-chief Luviana Ariyanti revealed that the short film aims to pressure the house, led by Speaker Puan Maharani, to immediately pass the Domestic Worker Protection Bill (RUU PPRT).

According to the film director Ani Ema Susanti, it tells the story of domestic workers’ ordeal during the 19 years of fighting for the bill to be passed into law.

“Because the only support currently is Speaker of the House Puan Maharani. So the film was made as an introduction to communication between domestic workers and Mbak Puan. So that their voice can be conveyed to Mbak Puan Maharani through this film,” said Luviana at the pre-launching event, Tuesday (10/10).

JALA PRT coordinator Lita Anggraini explained that domestic workers has continued to struggle since early 2000. To this day, they still carry out demonstrations every day in front of the parliament house. She hopes that the 15-minute-long film will help to throw spotlight on the struggles of domestic workers.

“Now the ball is in the House, especially the Speaker Puan Maharani. Hopefully we can score a goal this time,” said Lita.

Lita further said that currently there are 5 million domestic workers across Indonesia. According to her, the bill passage is very urgent because it concerns the fate of domestic workers.

“This is important and should not be held hostage because it is the same as holding hostage the fate of 5 million domestic workers at risk of modern slavery and human trafficking,” she added. After screening at the House, it will be shown in 10 cities in Indonesia. (un)
