Distorted Canadian Diplomacy: The Lingering Impact of a Cold War Mentality

Jakarta, IO – Canadian ambassador to China Jennifer May made an important point during her interview with CTV’s Question Period, when she emphasized that China and Canada are not adversaries. However, it is difficult to accept her belief that China has not interfered in Canadian elections.

May described the relationship between the two countries as “complex, multi-faceted, and very important.” While this may be true, we must consider how these adjectives relate to China’s alleged interference in Canadian elections, the expulsion of a Canadian diplomat, and China’s stance on the Taiwan issue.

If the Canadian government were to adopt an independent diplomatic policy, instead of merely following in Washington’s footsteps, bilateral relations would become less complicated. It is crucial for Canada to prioritize its own interests, and establish a diplomatic strategy that aligns with its unique position.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has repeatedly stated that China adheres to a non-interference policy and opposes meddling in the internal affairs of other nations. According to China, it has not interfered in Canada’s elections and has no intention of doing so. China upholds principles of independence, equality, mutual respect, and non-interference as a foundation of its diplomacy.

The accusation of Chinese interference in Canadian elections appears to be driven by a Cold War mentality and ideological biases. It lacks substantial evidence and seems to be an attempt to tarnish China’s reputation.

Regarding the expulsion of diplomats, it is important to note that Canada took the initial step by expelling a Chinese diplomat. The Taiwan issue, likewise, is considered an internal matter for China and not within Canada’s purview. The process and manner of reunification with Taiwan are solely China’s concern.

The ambassador correctly points out that China and Canada can be partners in some areas, while competitors in others. Expanding the scope of cooperation between both countries would be beneficial if Canadian politicians formulated diplomatic policies that prioritize the interests of their own people and avoid blindly following Washington’s lead.
