1.5-ton whale shark dies after being stranded in Kulon Progo

Jakarta, IO – A whale shark was found dead stranded in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Aris Widyatmoko, coordinator of the community rescue unit, said the mammal was stranded on the southern part of Garongan Beach, per CNN Indonesia, Mon (13/11).

Aris said the giant marine mammal was found on Wednesday (8/11) evening measuring around 8-10 meters in length and weighing 1.5 tons.

Whale shark is known as the biggest fish and sharks in the world, but they are endangered and under threat from unregulated fishing for their meat, fins, and oil, in addition to facing entanglements and vessel strikes.

In the last two months, five whale sharks were found stranded on the southern coast of Java in the coastal regions of Central Java and Yogyakarta, including the one at Trisik Beach, Kulon Progo in late October. (un)
