Western China hit by earthquake, no Indonesian nationals affected, says Kemlu

Jakarta, IO – Indonesian nationals in Xinjiang, China, are confirmed safe after a strong earthquake hit on Tuesday (23/1).

The statement was conveyed by Kemlu spokesperson Lalu Muhamad Iqbal based on the report from the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing which has coordinated with local authorities and communicated with the Indonesian community in the affected areas, per Viva.com.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked a mountainous and remote area centered in the Wushi region. The tremor was felt as far as Central Asia countries such as Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The impact caused two houses to collapse and cut off power in the areas near the epicenter. Xinjiang railway authorities also cancelled as many as 27 trips.

The Chinese government has deployed hundreds of rescue workers to the affected areas. Three residents were reported injured and being treated at a hospital 26 kilometers from the epicenter. (un)
