Walhi rejects Japan’s GX strategy it says will only worsen climate crisis

Jakarta, IO – Activists from the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) held a protest outside the Japanese Embassy, Jakarta, Tuesday (1/11).

They criticized the Japanese government’s efforts to promote and encourage investment in a variety of technologies such as ammonia and hydrogen co-firing, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, and the use of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) through the so-called GX (Green Transformation) strategy.

Walhi alleged that the GX strategy is being pushed to be implemented not only in Japan, but also especially in developing countries in Asia. Although Japan’s government describes the initiative as part of the efforts to achieve its vision of a decarbonized society. According to Walhi, it is a wrong solution to the energy transition drive, as it will only prolong the use of fossil fuel use and exacerbate the climate crisis and air pollution in Indonesia.
