Jakarta, IO – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Nurul Ghufron regrets the burial of the former Mayor of Batu Eddy Rumpoko, who was convicted in a corruption case, at the Suropati Heroes Cemetery, Central Java.

Ghufron is of the view that Eddy was not worthy of being buried in the heroes cemetery because he had harmed and betrayed the people and the country, per Tempo, Wed (13/12).

“We regret that someone who based on court decision has been found to be corrupt was buried in the heroes cemetery,” said Ghufron.

Ghufron said it would undermine the image of people who dedicated their life to the nation and state. Even though the late Eddy was considered a ‘hero’ because he had received many awards while in office, this status was automatically lost because he had committed corruption.

Eddy Rumpoko was arrested by KPK in September 2017 in a sting operation. He was caught red-handed receiving bribe in connection to a project in Batu City, Malang.

The judges ruled that Eddy was proven to have received Rp295 million in bribe and a Toyota Alphard worth Rp1.6 billion from a businessman. Eddy was then sentenced to eight years’ jail.

In 2022, while he was still serving his previous sentence, Eddy was again implicated in alleged gratification related to the previous case.

Eddy is suspected of receiving gratifications while serving as Mayor of Batu from the Regional Apparatus Organization (OPD) and a number of businessmen related to business licensing in Batu City. He was proven to have received up to Rp46.8 billion. (un)
