A recent study has found that a shocking 97 percent of all wild tigers have disappeared in the last century, with only about 3,000 of them remaining. World Tiger Day aims to prevent them from being extinct altogether.

One of the missions is to protect and expand their habitat, along with the preservation of this big cat species. It is also commemorated by many international organizations, including WWF (World Wildlife Fund), IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare), and the Smithsonian Institute. (rr)
