Jakarta, IO – Nunik (not her real name) experienced injustice from his employer in Malaysia. The domestic helper was physically abused and was not paid for five years, per CNNIndonesia, Wednesday (30/8).

Nunik told the bitter experience to the Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Hermono. She revealed that her former employer was an ex-politician who has the title “Dato” from the ruling party.

“Even though my employer has nine cars and a luxurious three-story house, I haven’t been paid for years,” Nunik told Hermono.

In her confession, Nunik said her employer often tortured her. This inflicted injuries and even made her disfigured. She also never received proper medical care. Nunik once tried to run away, but her attempt failed.

“I couldn’t stand the torments anymore, so I tried to run away and wanted to return to Indonesia,” she said.

Nunik finally managed to escape with the help of local residents. The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur received her with her face covered in bruises due to violence she endured from her employer.

Hermono said the embassy is providing protection and emotional support. Her family in Banjarnegara, Central Java, has been contacted. During her working in Malaysia, they lost contact.

According to Hermono, Nunik’s case is a clear evidence of exploitation by her wealthy employer. “And with the intention to violate her rights and deliberately demean her,” said Hermono. (un)
