Jakarta, IO – Indonesia and Germany are working together to develop a green transportation system. This step was taken both as an effort to reduce carbon emissions and as an initiative to implement green infrastructure.

“The two countries have had good relations for around 60 years and have worked together to reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change,” said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, per Medcom, Wednesday (15/11).

Budi acknowledged that the transportation sector is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. Therefore, Budi said that his ministry will continuously strive to create an environmentally friendly transportation system.

The German government through the KfW Development Bank (German Development and Investment Bank) has agreed to fund the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure (green transportation) in a number of cities in Indonesia.

Some examples of cooperation initiatives include the construction of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Semarang (Central Java) and Surabaya (East Java), as well as railways in Surabaya.

“We hope that more green transportation projects will start soon in line with the National Medium Term Development Plan 2025-29,” said Budi. (un)
