Five Historical Places to Remember Kartini in Jepara and Rembang

Jakarta, IO – Kartini Day is celebrated every year on April 21 to commemorate Raden Ajeng Kartini Djojo Adhiningrat, an Indonesian heroine hailed as a women’s emancipation icon. Kartini Day is a moment to remember her struggle for gender equality, especially in the field of education.

RA Kartini was declared a hero of Indonesian independence through Presidential Decree 108/1964 on May 2, 1964. At that time, President Soekarno also designated Kartini’s birthday on April 21st as the Kartini Day we celebrate today.

To learn more about RA Kartini, we should head to her hometown, especially Jepara and Rembang. She was born in Jepara but grew up Rembang until she died.

According to Kompas, Monday (17/4), here are the five historical locations to commemorate RA Kartini:

Kartini Museum in Jepara
This museum contains a number of Kartini’s legacy in the form of relics, clothing and writings. It is located at Jalan Kartini, Panggang, Jepara. There are also collections and documentation of historical and cultural objects that tells the story of Jepara.

This museum was established on March 30, 1975 during the administration of Regent Soemarno Djojomardowo, then inaugurated on April 21, 1977 by Regent Soedikto. When it was inaugurated, the museum consisted of three main buildings. When viewed from above, the building is in the shape of the letters K, T, and N, which are the consonant letters of Kartini’s name.
