Eni Discovers Large Gas Reserves in East Kalimantan

Jakarta, IO – Eni, an Italian oil and gas company, discovered large gas reserves in the North Ganal, East Kalimantan. It is said to be one of the three largest in the world this year.

Head of the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) Dwi Soetjipto said an initial estimate put the reserves at 5 trillion cubic feet (tcf). This news was conveyed by the Eni head of Far East exploration when he met Dwi Soetjipto at the ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi (1/10).

Dwi said it is one of the most significant discoveries that will increase gas reserves to support a sustainable increase in national oil and gas production and achieve the 2030 target of oil production of 1 million barrels per day (BOPD) and gas production of 12 billion cubic feet per day (BSCFD).

It will also spur massive exploration investment in the future considering that the national oil and gas potential is still promising with 128 basins, where 68 have yet been drilled.

“We hope that the discovery of gas reserves in North Ganal by an international oil company (IOC) will encourage more IOCs to enter Indonesia. This is certainly the fruit of one of the government’s efforts to increase the competitiveness of the national upstream oil and gas industry,” explained Dwi, per Detikcom, Thursday (5/10).

Dwi further said that SKK Migas will carry out intensive coordination with Eni for the next stages so commercial productions can begin soon.

SKK Migas will push for immediate production so that it can increase gas supplies to support national development, including gas downstreaming which is currently being pursued by the government. It is hoped that it can be developed quickly and efficiently because the gas infrastructure in East Kalimantan is already well established. (rr)
