A MURI record for 776 triumphant projects at the 2024 STEAM Expo

Jakarta, IO – Sampoerna Academy scored an outstanding achievement at the 2024 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Expo, earning the school a MURI Record for having the most STEAM project exhibitions in Indonesia. A total of 776 project works from 1,802 students at Sampoerna Academy in Jakarta L’Avenue, Sentul, BSD, Medan, and Surabaya were collected, demonstrating academic year 2023-2024 learning outcomes. 

Dr. Mustafa Guvercin, Sampoerna Academy’s Academic Director, pointed out “The STEAM pedagogy with Project Based Learning (PBL) has been our foundation in developing students’ abilities to engage in vital discussions and problem-solving. 

As the pioneer of this approach, Sampoerna Academy promotes the 5C competencies (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Character Development) among all students,” said Guvercin. He went on to say that the MURI record is a manifestation of Sampoerna’s commitment as a pioneer of STEAM education in Indonesia. 

Sampoerna Academy has successfully organized the 2024 STEAM Inter-School Competition, which was attended by students from schools across Indonesia. The 2024 STEAM Inter-School Competition aims to “Build, Create, Innovate,” reflecting Sampoerna Academy’s dedication to creating future leaders with excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 

The competition serves as a platform for young innovators to showcase their skills when facing challenges. Aliaa Mohamed Samaha, the Science Curriculum Head of Sampoerna Academy, explained that Sampoerna Academy played a significant role in inspiring other schools to adopt this innovative approach. 

“We are delighted to host the 2024 STEAM Inter-School Competition. As part of the 2024 STEAM Expo, the event reflects Sampoerna Academy’s vision to be the center of excellence in STEAM education. This competition reflects students’ success and ability as young innovators in demonstrating STEAM’s effective way of learning,” Samaha proudly stated. 

The STEAM Inter-School Competition 2024, held at Sampoerna Academy BSD marked the culmination of a series of events that began in January 2024. Registration ran from January 15th to March 1st, 2024, with project submissions from February 13th to March 1st, 2024. The finalists were announced on March 8th, 2024, and an information session for them was held on March 12th, 2024. 

The exhibition, final assessment, and winner announcement took place on March 23rd, 2024, at Sampoerna Academy BSD. This competition received 290 submissions from 162 students from schools around Indonesia, including Banyuwangi, Surabaya, Medan, Kediri, Sragen, Lematang Ilir in South Sumatra, Denpasar, Malang, Sumenep, and many others. The competition was separated into three categories: Elementary School (Grades 5-6), Junior High School (Grades 7-9), and Senior High School (Grades 10-12), with three winners per category receiving certificates, medals, and cash prizes worth millions of Rupiah.

Sampoerna Academy reaffirms its commitment as a pioneer of STEAM education in Indonesia by achieving a MURI Record in the 2024 STEAM Expo and successfully organizing the 2024 STEAM Inter-School Competition. This achievement also marks an important milestone in shaping future leaders to face global challenges with critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. 

“We wish to encourage more schools and students to engage in STEAM education. This competition is expected to promote more innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills among the younger Indonesian generation, preparing them for a future full of challenges,” concluded Dr. Guvercin. (rp)
