PBNU chairman: NU members not obliged to vote for PKB in elections

Jakarta, IO – Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) executive board chairman Ahmad Fahrur Rozi emphasized that NU members are not obliged to vote for PKB in general elections, in response to Instagram posting of National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin “Cak Imin” Iskandar which showed a T-shirt emblazoned with a slogan “NU Kultural Wajib Ber-PKB, Struktural Sakarepmu.”

According to Cak Imin, the picture was sent by the caretaker of the Cirebon Bina Insan Mulia Islamic Boarding School Imam Jazuli.

“No, [it is mandatory to vote for PKB]. That is each individual’s democratic right,” Fahrur told CNN Indonesian on Wednesday (18/5).

Fahrur said the word “mandatory” means that it has some form of consequences if it is not done. However, NU members are free to make their own political choices.
