Sam Ratulangi Airport temporarily closed due to Mount Ruang eruption

Jakarta, IO – Volcanic ash resulting from the eruption of Mount Ruang has forced Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi to be closed until Friday (19/4).

This has been confirmed by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari, per Sindonews.

The ejection of volcanic ash was reported to have reached North Minahasa regency on Thursday (18/4) and affected a number of districts including West Likupang, Wori, East Likupang and South Likupang.

The local disaster relief agency has issued an advisory urging the residents to wear facemask and remain calm.

As of Thursday (18/4), 11pm WIB, Tagulandang Port which sits not far from Gunung Ruang is currently being utilized for evacuation mobilization and distribution of aid to affected residents. The regional government has also activated a command post in Apengsala village situated 15 km from Mount Ruang.

So far, 272 households (around 838 people) have been evacuated to makeshift camps for survivors. The local administration is gathering information on the extent of damage caused and the threat posed by the volcanic eruption. Mount Ruang erupted on Tuesday (16/4) at around 7.15pm WITA. Its alert status has since been raised from level 2 to level 3 (second highest). (un)
