Virus variant that triggers Covid surge in Singapore detected in Indonesia

Jakarta, IO – Health Ministry (Kemenkes) reported that the latest variant of the Covid-19 virus — JN.1 — has been detected in Indonesia based on whole genome sequencing (WGS) data. So far, four cases have been detected, in South Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta and Batam, per CNN Indonesia, Tue (19/12).

Kemenkes disease prevention and control director general Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said the cases in South and East Jakarta were discovered on November 17 while the one in North Jakarta and Batam were on November 23 and December 13. He said all patients have been treated at local health offices.

It is feared that this variant will trigger a spike in cases in a number of neighboring countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia. Maxi appealed to the public to reimplement healthy lifestyle, especially wearing masks in public places.

The public is also asked to immediately complete their vaccination. “Immediately go to the nearest health service facility at the Community Health Center or Port Health Office without delay,” he said.

Currently, the caseload in Indonesia has reached 2,204 as of December 6-18. However, the hospital bed availability is still sufficient and the situation remains under control. (un)
