The Kenduri Swarnabhumi, the Traditional Preservation Ritual in the Batanghari River Region

Jakarta, IO – The Kenduri Swarnabhumi or “Golden Earth Purification”, the Malay cultural event focusing on the preservation of the Batanghari River Basin area in Jambi, is being held again this year until November. Initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, it is organized in cooperation with 12 Regional Governments and several cultural communities.

According to Detik, Wednesday (28/06/2023), this year’s Kenduri Swarnabhumi has the theme of “Love Our Culture, Preserve Our Rivers; Love Our Rivers, Preserve Our Culture”. As an effort to strengthen the lcoal culture and preserve local environment in one action, these local Governments are using the Kenduri Swarnabhumi to disseminate culture-based public policies that preserve the river ecology.

Some of the programs included in the scheme are expeditions along the Batanghari River; the performance of traditional events and festivals relating to the river; tree plantings; fish cultivation; involvement of local communities, especially the younger generation, in the cleaning of the river; updating of the Muara Jambi National Cultural Preserve and discussions concerning follow-up actions to preserve the Batanghari River Basin, including the implementation and restrengthening of the Batanghari Charter.

“The key for sustaining this platform is the involvement of all stakeholders, especially the local community, as it is something that affects the the most,” declares the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Director General of Culture, Hilmar Farid. (bp)
