Jakarta, IO – A female Sumatran tiger was born in good health at the Bioparco di Roma zoo in Rome, Italy, recently. The endangered species was named Terima Kashi.

According to the zoo’s official Instagram page @bioparcoroma on Wednesday (10/1), Terima Kashi was born from parents Tila and Kasih. Tila was born at Chester Zoo, England in 2011. Meanwhile, Kasih was born at Beauval Zoo, France in 2014.

“She is a very lively little girl, currently she is being nursed by her mother Kasih at a sanctuary zone,” wrote Bioparco.

The cub is now under monitoring and cannot be shown to the public. The zoo considers her birth very encouraging because the Sumatran tiger is one of the six living subspecies most at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching.

“It is estimated that there are only around 600 left in the wild. Our keepers monitor the welfare of the first Sumatran tiger cub born at Bioparco and ensure that she is in the best condition as it grows in her first days of life,” Bioparco explained.

Tigers generally have a gestation period of around three months and nursing between six to eight weeks. After that, the cub will learn to hunt and eat meat, but remain in close contact with the mother for 18-28 months. (bp)
