Sipon, wife of human rights activist and poet Wiji Thukul, dies at 55

Jakarta, IO – Siti Dyah “Sipon” Sujirah passed away in Solo, Thursday (5/1). Her death was mourned by many, including the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), civil society organizations and human rights activists.

“The big family of Komnas HAM would like to express our deep condolences for the death of Siti Dyah Sujirah (Sipon), wife of human rights activist Wiji Thukul, on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Farewell Mrs. Sipon, rest in peace, our prayers are with you,” said the statement uploaded by @komnas.ham.

This was followed by the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) which said that Indonesia has lost a staunch human rights defender who dare to oppose injustice.

“Both Sipon and Wiji Thukul are human rights defenders who must be remembered for their courage to oppose injustice and fight for human rights in Indonesia. Farewell, tough woman, we are grieving,” ICJR wrote on its official Instagram account.
