Retno outlines Indonesia’s three efforts to tackle terrorism at UNGA session

Jakarta, IO – Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi spoke at the 13th Ministerial Plenary Meeting of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) during the 78th United Nations General Assembly session in New York, Wednesday (20/9).

In it, she shared Indonesia’s experience in countering terrorism and handling radicalization, especially with regard to rehabilitation and reintegration (R&R) strategies for former terrorists, per Kemlu.go.id Thursday (21/9).

She explained that the approach was the first step taken to embrace former terrorists. According to her, this effort emphasizes the importance synergistic efforts between the government and the society by combining hard and soft approaches.

Second, to ensure that communication and information technology, which can quickly spread extremist ideas, is not being misused.

“The global threat of terrorism continues to increase and evolve,” she said. “Terror acts are becoming more diverse, the use of online propaganda and utilization of new technologies including drones and AI are also on the rise.”

Finally, Retno mentioned the government’s efforts to ensure a safe environment to prevent extremism, including through education programs for women and children.

She also expressed her hope that countries attending the forum can commit to ensuring that the implementation of the R&R strategy is done in an inclusive manner. (un)
