Jakarta, IO – People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) chairman Bambang “Bamsoet” Soesatyo highlighted a number of current issues when opening the annual joint parliament session in Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (16/8).

In the forum attended by 489 members of the MPR, House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD), Bamsoet said the hard work of the nation’s predecessors is the capital in realizing the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045. According to him, a number of steps need to be intensified to address the existing problems.

“The Golden Indonesia we aspire to is an Indonesia whose people are prosperous, which is marked by zero poverty,” said Bamsoet, per Kumparan, Wednesday (16/8).

Bamsoet said this vision could be achieved if Indonesia has a strong influence in global relations with the support of qualified human resources. According to him, in the midst of a ongoing global conflict, Indonesia needs to further strengthen its defense and security, including the economic aspect.

“State defense and security also includes an economic dimension. As a resource-rich country, Indonesia must build economic resilience and independence, which is supported by food, energy and industrial sovereignty,” he said.

Furthermore, he alluded to the downstreaming program being pursuit by Jokowi administration. Bamsoet agreed that Indonesia can no longer rely on the export of raw materials like in the 1990s.

Bamsoet believed that the existing raw natural resources must be managed domestically, so as to produce products that have a higher added value, and are able to boost domestic economic growth.

“Industrial downstreaming is an effort to create an efficient and just national economy as mandated by Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution,” he stressed.

To this end Bamsoet said a change in the mindset of development is urgent. He assessed that the government, business community and the public need to reorganize economic development in order to produce quality and sustainable growth. (un)
