Mother Teresa was born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910 in Skopje (now the capital of Macedonia). She died in Calcutta, India, on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was a Roman Catholic nun of Albanian descent and Indian citizenship who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India, in 1950. For more than 47 years, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying, and guided the expansion of the Missionaries of Charity frst in all of India and later in other countries. After her death, she was given the title ‘Beata’ (blessed) by Pope John Paul II.
