Jakarta, IO – Sniffing attack has been on the rise lately. Videos are circulating on social media warning about the modus operandi. One example is a courier sending a WhatsApp message containing a link and lure potential victims to tap on it.

Sniffing is a type of cybercrime where hackers use the internet traffic to steal personal information that may include usernames or passwords of m mobile banking app, credit card information, email, and others.

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) pointed out that fake couriers often sent APK file that is used to install applications on smartphones using Android OS, reported Katadata, Friday (16/12).

The perpetrators will disguise the malware application as an image file. This risk must be anticipated because if the file is downloaded, it will illegally retrieve data and information from the victims’ cell phones which can be used to remotely steal funds from victims’ accounts.
