Medan Dessert Week, indulging the sweet tooth in North Sumatra

Jakarta, IO – After a successful event for lovers of sweet stuff in Jakarta, the Jakarta Dessert Week (“JDW”) expands to another city: the Medan Dessert Week (MDW) will be held on 18 May- 4 June 2023. As an extension of the JDW, MDW is a creative platform based on the initiative of Gupta Sitorus, Talita Setyadi, Primo Rizky, Kevindra Soemantri and Tria Nuragustina.

During the 11 April 2023 press conference at the TS Cafe by Talaga Sampireun, Menteng, Jakarta, the JDW/MDW initiators introduced their partner Albert Arden, a creative economy entrepreneur based in Medan. “With many potential local talents, we have had varied offers from dessert and pastry businesses in Medan. We’re happy about this, as we want Medan to be known not just for traditional desserts, but also for modern ones,” Albert.

As with the JDW, the MDW is a curated “restaurant week” where the organizers curate proposals from multiple restaurants, cafes, and bakers, for those with the best narratives for their dessert products. JDW & MDW co-founder Gupta Sitorus declares that the methodology they use may change, to match the specific condition and modernity of the venue.

“Medan has a robust fine patisserie scene. Even before I started college back in 2010, Harper and Cordon has opened branches in Medan. In fact, alongside Medan’s own La Maison Patisserie, they have penetrated Jakarta. MDW is a way to connect dessert-related businesses with each other, to form a base for the dessert scene in Indonesia,” concurs Talita, co-founder of JDW and founder of BEAU Bakery.

Limited Edition Menu

The JDW is both the pioneer and sole organizer of dessert festivals in Indonesia. As we have said earlier, it sets a different limited-edition menu every year. Since its debut in 2019, themes have ranged from “Retro”, “Magic”, “Art”, and “Diversity”. “Just like with JDW participants, MDW participants are challenged to create their version of this thematic limited-edition menu,” Gupta Sitorus reiterates.
The limited-edition menu is a creative challenge that our culinary artists require to act “out of the box” and refresh the routine of the industry. On the consumer side, it is an experience of indulging in urban consumer trend of new and limited items. The excitement is expected to spark dialog and serve as a start to a conducive ecosystem for the growth and development of the dessert industry in Medan.

DESSERT MARKT, the Satellite Event at Sun Plaza

To introduce MDW to the people of Medan, the DESSERT MARKT: A Pop-Up by Medan Dessert Week will be held on 18-21 May 2023 at the Sun Plaza. The DESSERT MARKT is a bazaar that involves more than 60 dessert and pastry businesses in Medan. It is an initiative that continues from JDW’s DESSERT MARKT, a trade platform for emerging brands held at ASHTA District 8, Jakarta, on 26 January-30 April 2023.

MDW and DESSERT MARKT at the Sun Plaza are expected to promote local dessert businesses, promote local culinary wealth, introduce innovative dessert creations, and inspire the community with various interesting activities. With their array of sweet and savory snacks, they will certainly attract culinary tourists and turn Medan into a culinary tourism center. (des)
