Jakarta, IO – US President Joe Biden in an interview with CBS said US troops would help Taiwan defend itself in the event of Chinese attack.

When asked on the “60 Minutes” program, Biden said unequivocally “Yes” if it is an “unprecedented attack.” Biden’s statement is seen by many as a clear US support for Taiwan.

This came after the high-profile visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August. The visit angered China, sparking a massive military exercise by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) around Taiwan.

Washington severed formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 and recognizes Beijing as China’s sole legal government. But at the same time, the US maintains its role in supporting Taiwan under its “strategic ambiguity” policy.
