Jakarta, IO – PT KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI) is drawing up a plan to procure new train cars until 2027, after the plan to import of old train carriages from Japan to meet the demand for electric railways (KRL) was scrapped.

VP Corporate Secretary KAI Commuter Anne Purba explained the three procurement plans. First, next year KCI will import new KRL trains from Japan, per detikcom, Wednesday (12/7).

She said it would take at least 14-15 months to complete the process. Starting this month the company has carried out administrative process, technical assessments and negotiations with manufacturers in Japan.

“Our target is to sign the import contact in August or September at the latest,” said Anne.

Second, KCI and PT INKA have entered into a contract to purchase dozens of new trains. Until 2024, it is planned that there will be 24 new trains manufactured by INKA. In 2025-26 there will be 16 new train sets ready for use, the remaining eight will be delivered in 2027.

Third, KCI will modernize (retrofit) the trains that currently need to be retired. The technology of the 19 trains will be updated over the course of 14-15 months.

“Starting from this month, in line with the import of new KRL, we are assessing the need for KRL retrofit, like modernization, so this can be used to fulfill our needs,” said Anne.

In addition, Anne explained that currently the company is starting to readjust its services in Greater Jakarta. “For example, like the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route, which used to have many SF12 trains, has now been changed to SF8, but the frequency of train has not been reduced,” she explained. (un)
